Intro & Genesis 1:1-3:24

Many years ago (1998??) I ordered a One Year Chronological Bible (NIV) with plans to read it multiple times. I chose this particular one because it interspersed the psalms and chronicles where they fit. The Psalms are pretty amazing when read in context with a situation.

The January after we were married in April 2001, S and I started reading this bible every night and actually completed it in the year. Then we put it away.

Eight years later we have decided to read through it again. Now that we have 2 kids and life is so crazy, I doubt we will alternate reading it aloud each night. It is rare we go to bed at the same time. I just hope we stick with it again. So much has happened in the last 8 years. It will be interesting to see what we find new this time.

Day 1: Genesis 1:1 - 3:24

How many times have we read this as both children and adults? The second verse caught me though. "Earth was formless and empty...Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." I had images of a ball of water just suspended in air. Just there. And nothing. void. dry. empty.

Then he unleashed his creativity! Can you imagine the laughter when he was creating everything. Just think about some of the plants and animals you have encountered. God definitely has a wonderful sense of humor! God originally gave us every green plant for food. Now we know there are some that are poisonous. The result of our sin? Likely.

I also found it interesting that 2 of the 4 rivers flowing from the Garden of Eden are still on our maps today. And this is how old??? And people still deny the existence of God??

We all know the blame game that happens after the apple was eaten. But I don't think I ever caught this in 3:22ff "The man has now become like one of us. Knowing good and evil." Then Adam and Eve were banished from the garden. Somewhere it still exists...with cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth. Even little children know good and evil. Wouldn't it be wonderful to only know good? All day filled with the wonder of God and worship of Him?
