Genesis 7:1 - 9:29

Noah (say it in a deep voice ala Bill Cosby) that is what I hear when I read the name Noah. I hope you do too now. :-) Or the song...God said to Noah, you're gonna build an arky, arky...

Out of all the earth - only one man and his family was found righteous. Who would God find righteous today if he hadn't sent Christ to die for us?

The story of the ark is full of misconceptions. What did you learn in Sunday School? Now read these chapters. It doesn't jive! I remember the first time I read this in the bible for myself (in my 20's)...I was amazed. What else have I missed??

Misconception #1 - there were more than 2 of every animal. 7 (seven!) of every clean animal AND bird. 2 of every unclean animal. Animals that moved along the ground and had the breath of life.

Misconception #2 - only the rain was for 40 days and nights. Noah was on the packed ark much longer than that! Imagine the noise and stench. Then is said that the waters covered the earth for 150 days...7 months. May-December. I guess the water creatures had enough to eat with all the decomposing creatures from the land, eh?

Then it took 3 more months for the water to go away. Are you keeping track? 10 months so far. Then several more weeks sending out ravens and doves. Over a year later - Noah and his family were able to leave the ark. You try to prepare for a year with a boat full of animals and no plans for the future. Not easy. Near impossible. but Noah obeyed and 'did all god commanded'. Could I? could you?

and God promised to NEVER do that again. Wonder if he has ever regretted that promise. vs.8:21 states that God knows every inclination of our heart from childhood is evil. Why didn't he scrap it all and start over with the garden and a new adam and eve? Or would that have been too easy?

An image I had while reading was of a ball of water with a boat on it. In Genesis 1, I pictured a blob of water - formless. Now it is formed. but water again. is everything in the bible interconnected?

In chapter 9, God gives them all living creatures as food also. I did not realize that they were a vegetarian society until this point. (Thank you for allowing us to eat meat. Those ribs were tasty today!) 9:4 states you must not eat meat that still has it's life blood in it. Best case I have heard for a well done steak!!

They are then commanded the be fruitful and multiply. We are earth are still following that one pretty well.

The end is a bit hard to take.

Misconception #3 - Noah was righteous and holy, great and wonderful. Not really. If he did what he did before the flood, he may not be in the bible now. He planted a vineyard, got drunk, lay uncovered inside his tent and shamed his sons. One son laughed at him. Two covered him. One was cursed. Two were blessed. Do we shame others? Or try to cover them?
