Knowing God - Philippians 4:4
(from pastor)
Fighting for Joy. It seems we have to do a lot of fighting...for joy. for peace. against satan. But maybe by rejoicing and seeing his love and plan in our lives the fighting will be that much easier. Maybe.
And again I say, Rejoice.
Philippians 4:4
In order to achieve peace (Phil 4:4-7), Paul tells us to do five things: 1) be gentle ... 2) don't worry ... 3) pray frequently ... 4) give thanks ... and ... 5) well ...
The fifth thing that Paul encourages us to do -- actually the first thing he invites us to do -- is to rejoice continually. The question is: Why does he say it and then tell us to do it again?! Indeed, why does he mention the need to rejoice twice?
A simple definition of "rejoice" is "to express joy." I like a more active definition. Rejoicing is "possessing joy." Rejoicing is fighting for and actively claiming this great gift. Joy and peace are both fruits of the Spirit. Yes, the Spirit gives them ... but I also believe that we are called to fight for them. The world wants to steal love, joy, and peace from us. And I believe that Paul is saying -- perhaps -- the more we fight for one true blessing, the more other blessings will follow.
In Christ's Love,
a guy who's ready to plant a flag
and claim a little more joy
... and peace ... and love ...
